3 Reasons Why You Can’t Get Comfortable in Bed
Is there anything worse than flopping back and forth throughout the night because you can’t get comfortable? This is one of the most common requests I get from clients: “PLEASE tell me how to sleep through the night without my back killing me?!”
I’ve been there, too.
And after almost of a decade of working with clients, I’ve found these 3 reasons why you can’t get comfortable in bed to be GAME CHANGERS:
REASON 1: YOU’RE SLEEPING ON YOUR STOMACH
The optimal position to sleep is lying flat on your back…not on your stomach. It’s all about that good alignment! To get it, place a flat pillow beneath your head and another beneath your knees. (If you’re pregnant, avoid this position.) Your pillow should only be under your head, not your shoulders. Use one with a thickness that allows your head to be in a normal position to avoid straining your back.
REASON 2: YOU’RE TOO SCRUNCHED UP
The second-best position is side-lying. If you love sleeping on your side, stretch your legs out straight with your knees slightly bent and put a pillow between your knees. Avoid sleeping on your side with your knees drawn up to your chest because that’s too much stress on your spine. If you love sleeping in this fetal position, try straightening your body into a relaxed position by untucking your chin and adjusting your knees.
REASON 3: YOUR BED IS TOO SOFT
Get a firm mattress. If yours sags, you can place a board under your mattress. You can even try placing your mattress on the floor temporarily.
