How to Know if Your Back Pain Is Serious

It can be hard to know when to call your doctor and when to wait it out! Whether you woke up this week with sharp pain in your back or you’ve been dealing with it for months (or years!), here’s what you need to know:

Most of the time, back pain is treatable AND preventable!

Back pain is actually one of the most common medical problems in the US. It can range from a dull, constant ache to a sudden sharp pain that may shoot down the leg. Sometimes it comes on suddenly - like after falling down or lifting something heavy - or it can develop slowly because of age-related changes that happen to the spine.

There are 3 types of back pain:

  • Acute happens suddenly and lasts a few days to a few weeks.

  • Subacute can come on suddenly or over time and lasts 4-12 weeks

  • Chronic may come on quickly or slowly, lasts longer than 12 weeks, and occurs daily

The good news is that there are many ways to relieve it, so if one solution doesn’t work, another probably will!

My course, Get Comfortable, is for women with chronic or recurring back pain, meaning you deal with it regularly and it just keeps on coming back. Part of my course is determining YOUR specific pain patterns so that you can create the best at-home treatment plan for YOU.

There’s a long list of potential causes of back pain, which is why it’s important to talk to your doctor about it. If your doctor has determined that the cause of your back pain does not require medical attention, then my course is for you!

BUT if you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms along with your back pain, be sure to discuss them with your doctor right away:

  • Numbness and tingling

  • Severe pain that does not improve with medication

  • Back pain after a fall or injury

  • Trouble urinating

  • Weakness, pain, or numbness in your legs

  • Fever

  • Unexplained weight loss

Most importantly, if you’re questioning it at all then that’s a good enough reason to visit your doctor.

Okay, whew! That’s a lot of nitty gritty info.

Let’s take a deep breath and recognize that yes, back pain sucks…but it’s also just your body telling you that it’s time for a change. I’ll teach you the best ways to relieve that pain and give your back the change it wants!

So if you’re feeling crappy about how your body looks and feels, if you’re sick of sleeping uncomfortably, and if you’re tired of sitting in weird positions at work because your back is killing you, let’s fix it!
